Marlin, Marlin – Whose got the Marlin?

By Captain Wayne Slahor aka SDMC President

With the ending of the Zane Grey and the Drambuie Classic only resulting in a handful of marlin for over 100 participants, many of them some of the best teams the West Coast has to offer. So where did they go? To date we have had the worst season with only 7 marlin weighed in and 3 recorded releases.

Can we blame this on the longliners? I have spent a lot of hours on the water this year both as a charter boat captain and as a recreational fisherman and I have seen my fair share of the commercial boats. To quote Mark Wisch of the Western Outdoor News, "there has not been a good local Marlin season since the federal fisheries managers forced California to open its ports to longliners several years ago." To make your voice heard – A sample letter opposing this destructive form of fishing gear can be found at the The Billfish Foundation website: www.billfish.org/dir/advocacy/positions/CurtainsWestcoast.pdf

Are there other phenomena at work here? The marlin that have been seen are scattered up and down the coast from Catalina to the end of the 9-mail bank with no real concentrations anywhere.

The fish that are being seen don’t want to eat. And I’ve heard of more swordfish eating baits than marlin.

So where am I going with all this? I’m not sure, maybe just venting my frustrations along with everyone else. Hopefully, the water conditions will prevail and the fish Gods will smile upon us and we can have an outstanding October. Don Blackman recently told me that he remembered a similar situation many years back and that they finished off the season on Halloween weekend with wide-open fishing on the 43 spot.

Trophy Hunt Update

By Bob Woodard Jr.

As the season moves into fall we are still seeing an abundance of large albacore, like the 40 lb unit that Harry Okuda caught this September. There is still warm water along the coast from SD to King Harbor; however, the marlin fishing has been slow to this point. Lots of swordfish floating off Oceanside, so go get a two-finner -– that category is still open! With the club open 7 days a week we look forward to seeing you here. Keep the big jigs in the water and good luck, Bob.

Marlin Greg Tinney 177 lbs

Albacore Harry Okuda 40.87 lbs

Bluefin Tuna Andy Norton 77 lbs

Yellowtail Bob Hargrave 32.14 lbs

Halibut J.B. Bingham 35.5 lbs

White Seabass Billy Miyagawa Jr. 55 lbs

Dorado Harold Weimer 16.4 lbs

Swordfish Open

Barry Rockwell got a 22.4 lb Albacore on a Fly-Rod.

SEPTEMBER MARLIN MADNESS WINNER IS:

Greg Tinney with a 178 lb marlin. Greg won a TLD 20 reel.
Congratulations!

ILLT RESULTS

We had a total of 34 anglers participate on 10 boats with 1 winner taking it all! Erich Borstede (on the Pamela B) swept the field with a 123 lb Marlin using 20 lb test. Erich won the biggest fish award, the highest team award and the highest club award to take back the Southwestern Yacht Club. The most amazing thing about this catch is that Erich was completely alone when he caught the Marlin.
Congratulations Erich!!

Erich and Pam Borstede received an award from SDMC President, Wayne Slahor

SMALL BOAT TOURNAMENT RESULTS

No Marlin weighed in. In the tuna division two fish were weighed in:

1st place went to Frank Belcher with an 18.4 lb Bluefin Tuna. Frank’s father was the first president of the Marlin Club. He came over here from New Mexico to fish the tournament with his two sons who live in Palm Desert. Frank won a Trinidad 20.

2nd place went to Stuart Merrill with an 14 lb Bluefin Tuna. Stuart won a Calcutta 400S. Stuart and his crew trailered their boat down here from Santa Barbara to fish the S.B.T.

The two reels for the Marlin Division were raffled off to the participating anglers.

MAKE-A-WISH TUNA CHALLENGE - $93,000 collected

Marty Morris does it again! Acting on some HOT information from the SWYC then going to the wrong place, then ended up (got lucky!) with three large Bluefin Tunas and won the tournament. Way to go Marty!  The Ken-Dan crew: Ian Orr, Ken Morris, Gail Orr, Marty Morris Martin L, and Geoff Halpern. Weighed in a total of 254 lbs and 4 oz for the Large Boat Division.

On the other end of the spectrum…

A story from Steve Turner of the Flying Fingers who also participated in the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge.

Blake Smith, John Duquin and I participated in the annual Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge Foundation 2002 Tournament. We left Friday night after getting bait – 1 full scoop of weak and poor sardines – on the way south at 200 degrees we encountered five tuna purse seiners so we ignored them and continued south past them but then all of a sudden we saw two spotter planes that kept circling around the school of fish. We decided to turn and head toward the spot they were circling above. YELLOWTAIL!!! Ugh! We realized those purse seiners were wrapping up schools of yellowtails not tuna. We wasted three hours frolicking around with those dang commercial boats and came up empty handed so we stared trolling south. At sunset we stopped and tried fishing with the only three dying sardines left and BAM! John got a huge bite. We were hoping for bluefin tuna but it was a big stubborn hefty 26 pound Albacore. Albacore was good enough to earn us 7th place in the tournament!

I applaud Blake Smith and John Duquin for their great cooperation, hard work and great skills in winning us the 7th place out of a total of 139 boats and 498 anglers in this largest tournament ever hosted in San Diego this year!

Recipe Corner

Roasted Red Pepper Sauce
By Chef No-Tell

Goes extremely well with the Secret Marinade in last month’s issue.
3 large red bell peppers
3 Tbl fresh lemon juice
1 cup (1/2 pound) butter or margarine, cut into 1" pieces
¾ teas dried tarragon, crumbled
½ teas dried thyme, crumbled
¼ teas salt
1/8 teas freshly ground white pepper

Grill peppers on the grill, turning frequently using long-handled tongs. This will take about 8-10 minutes; all sides should be charred and blistered. Immediately place the peppers in a large plastic gag, and secure shut. Let stand for 10-12 minutes.

Remove the peppers from the bag, cut off the tops, and remove the skins by rubbing gently under cold water. Discard the seeds. Slice the peppers and puree in a food processor fitted with the steel blade or in a blender.

Blend together the lemon juices and pepper puree in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes and remove from the heat. Using a wire whisk, add the butter. Whisk in the tarragon, thyme, salt and pepper. The sauce should be served immediately, so grill the fish while completing the sauce.
