JULY 24TH SATURDAY SUNDOWNER  @ The Marlin Club

Potluck starts at 5:30ish – the BBQ is available – Bring a dish to share.  This is a great time to meet our new club members and share “fishing stories”.  We hope to see you.   Call the club for more details or just show up with goodies. J   We are trying to line up a guest speaker – no confirmation yet.

“THAT SINKING FEELING”

Ever had it?  Ever worried about it? What brings this up is the fact that we had a boat almost sink at our docks. Because of some quick action by our members the boat did not go completely down, but did have enough water aboard to do damage to the outboard motor. The cause was a hose that came off of the bait pump outlet. The bait pump wasn’t running, but was below the water line on a straight thru hull.

Can these types of mishaps be prevented – quite possibly.

1. A pre-launch check list should be utilized
2. All hose’s and their fastening systems should be checked periodically
3. All thru hulls should be valved, and put in the off or closed position when the boat is sitting idle and not attended.
4. Having all your contact info readily available when berthed at the club docks.

When leaving your boat at the club docks it is very important that we have your “up-to-date” contact information. We have people in and out of the club on a regular basis and usually a boat listing to one side draws their attention.

REMINDER: Our busy season is upon us and we need to emphasize our dock rules:

1. Call ahead and let us know your name, type of boat, and when you will arrive/depart. Leave your current contact information.

2. You MUST have your proof of insurance on file with the club. This is only for persons utilizing the docks on an overnight basis.

3. Your stay is limited to 1-2 days. Any longer than that requires special arrangements with the club.

4. Your club sticker MUST be displayed.

Due to the high volume of traffic that we are expecting this season, we will be enforcing these rules. This will help everyone to have a safe and enjoyable trip.

MAINTENANCE Q&A

How often should I check the zinc rods on my diesel’s raw-water cooling system, and what is the procedure? M.K., via e-mail

Most engine manufacturers recommend inspecting and/or replacing zincs every 50 hours, but check your owner’s manual for specifics.

Inspection is quick and easy. First locate the zincs. Sometimes they are visible by their brass or red tops. Otherwise, check your manual. Unscrew each rod and tap it lightly. If it flakes, breaks, or shows signs of deterioration, replace it. As with fuel and oil filters, it’s a good idea to change all rods at the same time. When installing a new rod or reinstalling an old one, run your finger around the threads with Teflon paste. No adhesive is required. Painting the tops will make them easier to find.
