Dr. Martin Leon "Marty" Morris
October 27, 1929 - July 11, 2012
MORRIS, MARTIN LEON, M.D. Marty passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 11, 2012, at the age of 82. He was born October 27, 1929 and grew up in Chicago, Illinois, graduating from Von Steuben High School.
He received a B.S. in Liberal Sciences from the University of Illinois and continued his education there with a medical degree in 1955 and a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Northwestern/ Cook County Hospital program. While completing his residency, he was drafted by the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War to serve his country as a physician at March AFB. In 1963, he permanently moved to California and established a thriving Orthopedic Surgery practice in the San Fernando Valley.
The following year, on a blind date set up by close friends, Marty met his future wife, Carolyn Myers. After moving to California, Marty got hooked on saltwater fishing and became an avid fisherman from the family's boat "Ken-Dan" for 35 years.
Among his accomplishments were catching two swordfish in four days in 1979, earning the nickname "Dr. Sword." While fishing with his family and friends, Marty participated in and won many tournaments. In 1997, after retiring from his Orthopedic practice, Marty and Carolyn moved to San Diego.
In order to keep his mind sharp, he continued to provide orthopedic care, both to the underserved at son Kenneth's community health center and to veterans at the VA hospital. At the time of his passing, Marty was the oldest active medical staff member of the VA. With his surgically gifted hands, Marty also was reinvigorated by creating masterful stained glass panels that he donated to people and organizations all across the country.
Most recently, he was an avid supporter of and volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and its Tuna Challenge.
Marty also enjoyed storytelling and writing anecdotes; his commentaries could often be seen in the Union-Tribune and fishing publications. Just days prior to his passing, he enjoyed one last fishing trip with his long-time friend Harry.
Survived by his wife of 47 years, Carolyn, he was a proud father of sons Kenneth of San Diego, Daniel of Chicago, IL, and daughter Melody of San Diego; older brother to Alan (also an Orthopedic Surgeon), St. Louis, MO; grandfather to Noah, Jenna and Amelia.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the San Diego Marlin Club, 2445 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego on Sunday, July 22nd at 9:00 a.m. with a private burial at sea in the near future. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation - San Diego, 2440 Hotel Circle North, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92018.
Dr. Martin "Marty" Morris
19 - July 11, 2012
July 13, 2012 - Marty Morris passed away in his sleep early Wednesday morning, according to his son, Dr. Ken Morris. Sportfishing lost a true friend and tireless volunteer. An avid big-game angler, Morris named his boat the Ken-Dan after his two sons. Morris took pride in fishing with his family and close friends, and they won their share of tournaments and prizes. On Oct. 30, 1982 the Morris family, with Marty at the wheel, landed three striped marlin off the San Diego coast. Marty’s wife, Carolyn, caught a 105-pounder; Dan boated a 106-pounder; and Ken caught the heaviest, a 158-pounder.
Marty Morris was a retired physician. He, Carolyn and Ken, who is associate medical director and chief of pediatrics at North County Health Services, helped make the annual Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge a successful fundraising event. A memorial is planned for 9 a.m. Sunday July 22, at the San Diego Marlin Club.
“It will be an informal memorial where everyone can tell their favorite stories,” said Ken Morris, who added anglers wearing their favorite fishing shirts will be welcome. - Ed Zieralski

DON ABREGO
March 3, 1923 to March 1, 2011
Don Abrego was the weigh-master at the club for many years. He was an important part of our crew on the Watercloset from when we met in the mid 70' until we sold the final on in the early 90's. He was also a frequent Baja travel companion and house guest at our Rancho Deluxe.
Thought the news of his passing would be of interest to some of the older members.
He, Skelly Wilbur and Bob Newton pioneered catching a marlin solo back in the 70's. A feat the many of us late comers admired and subsequently achieved and were invited into their very select club.

Lois Ibey - Passed away November 18, 2007
"I learned today from Scott Ibey, that his mother, Lois Ibey, passed away November 18th after a long illness. Beyond her family I feel that Lois's greatest love was for The Marlin Club. For many years she held the Club together with a tight hand and deep personal commitment. She always held us all to the strictest of the Club traditions. She helped me out a lot (and chewed me out, too). I will sincerely miss her."
Ed Waldman
Having known Lois Ibey in two ways, I feel twice as fortunate. I first became acquainted with Lois during the summer of 1978. My father, George "Karima" Nelsen had just landed his first broadbill and as a young person I was naturally interested in all the "Tasks" delegated to this very professional as well as conscientious lady. Lois truly followed every task given her to it's completion. Anything short of this was unacceptable to her. New to San Diego, we relied on her that day for "Photographic", "Taxidermy", & many other references. Lois was literally a "walking Yellow Pages" for the members of The Marlin Club.

"CALIFORNIA SPECIALTY SHIRTS"
There was a “scattering of ashes” for Lois and Mel Ibey. Boats departed the San Diego Marlin Club by 9:00am Sunday, December 30th, convoyed to Buoy # 3, deposit the ashes, and return to the dock. The Ibey family was aboard Dave Heft’s boat PALAPA assisted by John Shea and Bill Fiedler.
Glen H. Munkelt Jr. - June 19, 1918-July 26, 2007 He was born in San Diego and was an artist. Survivors include his wife, Cecelia Munkelt; sons, Stephen Munkelt and Dana Munkelt of San Diego; and sister, Jeanette Hoover of San Clemente. Glen was a member of the Marlin Club since July 23, 1965.
Thelma "Teddy" R. Schlieder - December 4, 1922 to January 23, 2007 - Teddy was a volunteer at the San Diego Marlin Club for many years.
Wendell L. Dyke - Passed away July 21, 2006 - He loved San Diego and the good fishing friends he had. Wendell L. Dyke History: Charter and Founding Member of the Mission Bay Marlin Club.
